Imagine educational spaces brimming with fulfillment, nurturing well-being and fostering growth. That's the ideal we aim for, yet within Canadian post-secondary institutions, gender-based challenges persist—violence, discrimination, and entrenched harmful gender norms.
In the past year alone, a staggering 47% of students at post-secondary institutions encountered or witnessed discrimination based on gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation, and one in ten women experienced sexual assault.
Universities and colleges have long been acknowledged as critical grounds for gender-based violence prevention. They are spaces where people of all genders come together to work, play, and learn—from the classroom to the sports field—and as such, they offer opportunities to drive change.
And it’s not just for the sake of women and other marginalized genders. The gender gap in post-secondary education has been steadily growing. Women are pursuing higher education at record rates. Meanwhile, for men, these numbers have stalled. The gap in graduation rates is even larger, as male undergraduates are less likely to complete their degree. These issues require us to include people of all genders in our gender justice efforts
So how can we leverage our positions as leaders in post-secondary settings to create positive and lasting change? How can we work with men to progress gender justice in our educational institutions?
