Time for another Deep Dive, everyone! 🌊
Deep Dives are member-led, one-hour discussions on wide-ranging topics — but always linked in some way to masculinities, gender equity, mental wellness, and/or healthy relationships.
Bring your coffee and settle in for a great conversation. Or, if you've got a busy day, you're welcome to join from your phone while on the go!
This time, we're talking about dance! 🕺
For some men, dance is taboo – it feels off limits and feminized, for other men it’s an integral part of their masculinity, and for others, we’ve fought against our socialization to do it anyways. Whether you dance or not, patriarchy shapes how we see ourselves as dancers (or non-dancers), and how we see dance itself.
Some of the questions we are keen to explore:
What is the relationship between masculinity/patriarchy and dance? How is this different across cultures? What does this tell us?
What has been your experience with dance and masculinity? How has dancing (or avoidance of dance) been linked to masculinity for you?
Patriarchy pressures men to never be vulnerable, but dance could be considered something that is vulnerable in its nature... but why might we see dance as more vulnerable than some other form of exercise, like running track or playing badminton? What's the difference?
Has your relationship with dance changed over time? Has gender had anything to do with that change?
How might sexuality impact our relationship to dance? (i.e. heterosexuality or queerness)
How has patriarchy shaped the spaces in which we dance by shaping their structures, rules, norms, or what we expect within those spaces? (Bars/clubs, dance classes, dance competitions, social dancing, ceremonial dancing, professional dance performances, cultural celebrations, etc)
And we'll go from there!
Hope to see you there On Sunday Feb 11 at 10 am PT / 11 am MT / 1 pm ET! 🙌
