👨‍🏫 Real Talk Workshop: How To Help A Friend In An Unhealthy Relationship

If a friend you knew was feeling stuck in an unhealthy relationship, or experiencing violence at the hands of their partner, would you know what to say or how to help?

What if it wasn’t physical violence, but you saw other red flags — warning signs of an unhealthy relationship that could become abusive in different ways. Maybe you see your friend’s partner dismissing their emotions, putting limits on their liberty, controlling who they can see, where they can go, or access to their own bank account. What could you do then?

We’re not all emergency responders or social workers, and that’s totally okay. We don’t have to be in order to be supportive, safe, and helpful to the people around us. However, we do need to learn (and practice!) some skills

Studies show that many people who are experiencing abuse in their relationships will disclose this to a friend, family member, or coworker before going to a formal support (like a therapist, law enforcement, or domestic violence organization). So we need to be ready to support the people around us.

Join us as we learn and develop the skills to be compassionate supporters to the people around us who might be experiencing abusive or unhealthy relationships.

This workshop, led by Pathways member Trevor Williams (Sagesse), will give us time to practice these skills:

đź‘€ How to recognize abusive or unhealthy behaviours in relationships.

🧡 How to practice our empathy skills in what can be a very challenging situation.

đź’¬ How to ask more helpful questions.

đź‘‚ How to effectively listen, and plan around next steps.

Using scenarios, case studies, and other exercises, we will work in small groups to practice these skills together!
