International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political, and social achievements of women past, present, and future.

The roots of International Women’s Day go back to the labour movements of the 1900s in North America and across Europe, but since then, it has really taken on a global, international focus—especially since 1977, when the United Nations General Assembly invited Member States to recognize March 8 as an annual United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

For Next Gen Men, it’s also an important opportunity for us to step back, listen, and reflect on the role of men and boys in advancing full and equal participation for women and girls. We need to recognize the power and privilege that are afforded to men and boys, to address the systemic discrimination and the societal attitudes that stand in the way of gender equality, and to acknowledge the progress made, and also keep pushing forward. There is momentum building for the idea that gender equality is not just a women’s issue, but there is also a lot of work still to be done.
