How to Use the Boys Will Be _ Card Deck
Tags
Each card has a set of tags that indicates which themes best fit that card’s quality. The idea is to avoid pulling a card that says something like ‘fun’ while setting the foundation for a conflict resolution conversation—which would likely make you or your youth participants feel a bit confused about what to do with it.
Essentially, the tags offer a way to divide the deck based on its purpose.
Reflecting on Self
Our thoughts and feelings can be hard to hold in sometimes. But if we pause to reflect on our identities, we can appreciate how far we’ve come and envision where we’re going.
Deepening Relationship
Showing others we love them often requires loving ourselves first. If we focus on being better family members, friends, students, and neighbours, our relationships will develop in fulfilling ways.
Resolving Conflict
When we navigate conflict with empathy rather than anger or frustration, we improve our relationships and become more effective at communicating and working together.
Healing
Life is full of ups and downs. If we can face difficult experiences with a commitment to love ourselves no matter what, we build our capacity to meet future challenges with resilience.
Seeking Justice
Some people are targeted for no reason other than who they are. When we look out for others’ wellbeing and stand up for them when they need someone in their corner, we make the world a better place.
Example: To set the tone for a sharing circle in which boys share more vulnerable parts of themselves, use the cards with the Deepening Relationship tag.
Questions
The affirmations are accompanied by a set of eight thought-provoking questions designed to help youth reflect on how the card resonates in their own lives.
